Hi friends, I'm continuing to talk about beach wedding ideas and today is the Sand Ceremony's turn. The Sand Ceremony is the beach version of the Unity Candle Ceremony :)
There is no way to do the Unity Candle ceremony on the beaches in Sarasota Florida. Mainly because of the wind, but also because fires are not allowed on the beach :)
The tradition actually started in the 1980s when people started doing more ceremonies outdoors and needed an alternative to the Unity Candle which was a popular tradition in the Catholic faith.
So let's explain the Sand Ceremony idea. Let's go
The blending of the colors and the flowing of the sand in the Sand Ceremony symbolize the bringing together of two lives into one. The two sand colors symbolize everything that the bride and groom have been, are, or will become in the future.
Blending the sands represents the union not only of them but their friends and families as well. The separate sands are poured into a unity container. Once poured they can never be put back into their separate containers. They have forever entwined just as the lives of the couple. It represents two people coming together in marriage.
Some couples like to pour some base sand before pouring their individual sands. They usually use the sand from the beach they are getting married at, as the base sand. It's a wonderful way to incorporate nature into the ceremony and bring home a little slice of paradise with you. You can ask your officiant to pour the base sand or you can pour it during or before the ceremony.
Some couples also prefer to leave a small amount of sand in their respective container to show that even though they now function as one, they remain individuals.
Is the Sand Ceremony right for my wedding?
The origins of the unity sand ceremony are in Christian and Catholic ceremonies. However, the ceremony has evolved, and now couples of all religions and denominations can choose to have one. It’s open to anybody who wishes to incorporate it into their ceremony. Some couples choose to incorporate their parents in the ceremony and some couples incorporate their kids.
So there it is, all you need to know about the sand ceremony. Hope this information helps you organize your beach wedding. More info on ceremonies here.
Love, Lu.
